Relapse After Leaving the Drug Treatment Center
Many people suffer from a relapse during their first year after leaving a
drug treatment center. The most common reason for a person to be
readmitted to a drug treatment center is that the individual stopped
attending their group meetings, stopped following through with their
after-care, or discontinued using the methods they were taught during
their drug treatment. It’s important to remember that an addiction is
never really cured, it just goes into remission. Relapse doesn’t just
start when a person begins abusing drugs again. It starts a long time
before the addiction enters back into the person’s life. This is why
ongoing support from the drug treatment center is so important. Research
has shown that those who have completed drug treatment do the best when
they continue to attend the recommended meetings and comply with the
extended drug treatments suggested.
Don’t be discouraged if you relapse after completing your drug treatment.
In many cases, people will need more than one stay at a drug treatment
center in order to maintain abstinence and sobriety. Maybe your family
situation wasn’t completely fixed or addressed the way that it needed to
be, and additional drug treatment and counseling in this area may be what
you need to be successful. Whatever the problem may be, it’s not uncommon
to need to go through drug treatment again, and that the problems
remaining are very fixable.
Drug Treatment doesn’t Need to be Voluntary to be Effective.
While it is ideal that an individual voluntarily decide to attend drug
treatment, it is by no means the only way that drug treatment can or will
be effective. Encouragement from family, friends, school, or work can also
strongly influence the person into drug treatment, and successfully
eliminate the drug abuse habits. Mandatory drug treatment due to trouble
with the law, followed by support from family and friends can also
convince an individual that going to a drug treatment center is the right
choice for them, ultimately leading to success in eliminating all drug
abuse behaviors.
Rehabilitation Often Requires more than one Stay at a Drug Treatment
Center
As stated above, relapses of drug use can, and does occur quite often in
recovering addicts, even after the individual seems to have been
successful in the completion of drug treatment. Many people suffering from
problems with drug abuse will often require a number of different
occasions spent at a drug treatment center to continue with the goal of
eliminating drug abuse and achieving sobriety. The participation of the
individual in support programs throughout and after the drug treatment is
often very helpful in maintaining sobriety and abstinence. All those
involved in choosing a drug treatment center should ask the drug treatment
facility what types of aftercare treatment programs are offered to their
patients in order to enable the individuals continue to work toward a life
without drug abuse and a life of sobriety. These after-care programs are
pertinent to the individual being successful in their goal of achieving
sobriety and maintaining this new, healthier lifestyle
