What to Expect from Drug Addiction Treatment

Drug addiction treatment is a somewhat complex process. After all, each addict responds differently to different forms of treatment. As such, finding the proper drug addiction treatment plan that will work for a person can involve a bit of strategy and getting to know the addict’s unique personality and needs. Nonetheless, the basic format of drug addiction treatment is essentially the same regardless of the person being treated.

Starting a Drug Addiction Treatment Program

The first part of a drug addiction treatment program involves undergoing a physical. This part of the drug addiction treatment program is essential because it allows the treatment staff to better formulate a plan that is unique to the individual. This is because the physical involves gathering information on the physical, mental, and emotional health of the person undergoing treatment.

If a person enrolls in a drug addiction treatment program and is already suffering from health issues, for example, the method of treatment may need to involve treating that health issues. Or, certain types of treatment options may not be utilized. For example, an alcoholic involved in a drug addiction treatment program might take a certain drug that will make him or her sick when drinking alcohol as part of the treatment plan. For those with liver problems, however, this is not a possible treatment option because taking these drugs can cause further damage to an already damaged liver.

The physical will also involve evaluating the addict’s emotional health. By getting a better idea of where the addict stands from an emotional standpoint, the staff of the drug addiction treatment facility can better determine the type of counseling and treatment that is likely to help the addict the most.

Getting Detoxified Through a Drug Addiction Treatment Program

After undergoing the physical, the next step in a drug addiction treatment program is to go through the detoxification process. Detoxification is an important component of the drug addiction treatment program because it involves cleansing the body of the drugs within the system. Since each drug reacts differently in a person’ system, the method used for cleansing may be a bit different. Similarly, the philosophy of the treatment center will come into play.

Throughout the detoxification component of the drug addiction treatment program, the addict works at getting past his or her physical dependency on the drug. At some drug addiction treatment programs, this may be done by going “cold turkey.” Other drug addiction treatment programs, on the other hand, may utilize substitute drugs that help wean the addict from his or her addiction.

Regardless of the method used by the drug addiction treatment program, the addict must be monitored closely throughout the entire process. This is because the physical symptoms of withdrawal can be very difficult for the addict to cope with. In fact, some withdrawal symptoms can be life threatening. Therefore, the drug addiction treatment facility must monitor the health of the addict throughout the entire process in order to make sure his or her health is not in danger.

Finding the Root of the Problem with the Drug Addiction Treatment Program

After getting beyond the initial detoxification stage, the addict must then work at understanding the cause of the addiction. In order to address this issue, the drug addiction treatment program typically includes a counseling component. The counseling component often involves both group counseling and individual counseling.

With the group counseling aspect of the drug addiction treatment program, the addict meets with several other addicts and a counselor in order to discuss their drug problem. These sessions are intended to help the addicts learn from one another and to draw strength from one another’s experiences.

The drug addiction treatment program will also include an individual counseling component. With individual counseling, the addict meets one-on-one with a counselor and discusses various aspects of his or her addiction. Often, this discussion involves trying to determine what caused the addiction and what actions or activities “trigger” the addict to use drugs. For example, visiting a certain person’s home may make the addict more inclined to abuse drugs.

By getting to the root of the cause of the addiction, the drug addiction treatment program can help the addict set goals and determine methods for avoiding these triggers. Together, the counselor and the addict can develop different plans and activities for avoiding drug use. Some of these plans may be role played with the counselor or with other addicts at group therapy.

Monitoring Activities After Being Released from a Drug Addiction Treatment Program

After being released from a drug addiction treatment program, many addicts enjoy the benefit of an aftercare program. An aftercare program is a special program developed by the drug addiction treatment program that involves monitoring the addict after being released. The purpose of this monitoring is to make sure the addict is utilizing the skills he or she gained while in the drug addiction treatment program. The aftercare program will also provide the addict with additional support and care to help improve his or her chances of staying clean.

Having an aftercare program is an important component of a drug addiction treatment program. Without the added support and monitoring of such a program, some addicts will return to drug use right away. The way these programs are implemented, however, will vary from one drug addiction treatment program to the next. For example, one drug addiction treatment program may actively monitor the addict while another may be more passive and essentially remain available to the addict whenever he or she may need extra help.

Care must be taken when selecting a drug addiction treatment program. Although the basic goals of all of these programs are the same, the approaches they use can be quite different. Therefore, selecting the program that best fits the addict’s needs is important in order to ensure the greatest chance of success. The methods used during the detoxification process, the type of counseling program utilized, and the extent of the aftercare program should all be considered when determining which program will best fit the addict’s needs.
